I was cutting up
a cauliflower yesterday
and paused, knife
dangling in air, thoughts
akimbo:
do I cut at the trunk and
let the florets — the
aimless wandering in
fevered blossom — the
crippled crown anemic —
fall where they may?
or is it better to trim
the milquetoast nothings so
they uniformly fit into
my Tuesday salad?
